In a previous blog post, we shared with you some diamond blade issues that you might have encountered. We also shared with you the ways on how to address those problems. Today, we’re following up the previous post by adding more helpful diamond blade handling tips.
Here is the second part of our article on how to troubleshoot diamond blades.
1. There is uneven tension wear: There are several factors that lead to segment wear. One is equipment defect: bad bearings, worn arbor shafts, or misaligned spindles. In this case, the defective parts should be replaced. When using concrete saws, remember to check that the engine runs smoothly to avoid harmonic vibrations. Uneven tension wear also happens when the saw is misaligned. In this case, check the saw head alignment for both vertical and horizontal squareness. When there is insufficient water on both sides of the diamond blade, tension wear can also occur. It is important to flush out the water system and check the flow and distribution to both sides of the blade.
2. There are cracks in the steel core slot: This can be caused by the incompatibility of the blade and the material being cut, in which case a softer bond diamond blade may be used to eliminate the stress causing the cracks. You should also check the water feed on both sides of the blade because another cause of cracks is overheating via lack of water. A blade losing tension can also be the culprit. In this case, tighten the blade shaft nut and check that the blade is running at proper tensioned speed. The drive pit should also be functioning properly.
3. There is undercutting in the steel center: This happens when you cut into the sub-base of the material. The best way to handle a diamond blade issue like this is to provide sufficient water supply to the steel center area which is immediately adjacent to the segment especially when making deep cuts. Also, remember to use as much water as needed to flush out abrasive fines generated during cutting because this can cause abrasion of the steel center. You can also opt to use wear-retardant cores.
